The Great Wall of Vagina

I’m not eeeeeeeeeeeveeeeeeeen going to get started on the abject, pervasive dehumanization of women in our society. I just love this project so, so much. In a culture where women and girls are being told they have to look exactly one way (long-torsoed, slim waisted, large breasted, hairless, white teeth, full hair, tan, etc.)  and having these images shoved in their faces non-stop this wall really is a wall of sorts between truth and disinformation.

The book I just enjoyed so much, about living in a culture of shame, talks about how important it is for women to know they are not alone in their feelings. In a society where labioplasty is on the galloping rise, this reminder that every single woman (The age range of the women is from 18 to 76. Included are mothers and daughters, identical twins, transgendered men and women as well as a woman pre and post natal and another one pre and post labiaplasty.) is different and there is NO one single way we are supposed to look is refreshing.

Vulvas and labia are as different as faces and many people, particularly women, don’t seem to know that. Men tend to have seen more than women, who have often only seen their own, and many have never looked that closely. Hence the exposure of so many, showing the variety of shapes is endlessly fascinating, empowering and comforting. For many women their genitals are a source of anxiety and shame rather than pride and this piece seeks to redress the balance, showing that everyone is different and everyone is normal.

There’s a video on the artist’s site and he says, “This is what normal women look like.” No, this is what  WOMEN look like. There’s no fucking “normal,” you idiots! Nothing about you or me or the status quo is “normal.” The majority isn’t “normal,” (right, Reichstag?), any particular curl of hair, shade of pubes, placement of teeth or aaaaaaannnnnnnnyyyyything is, or ever could be, “normal.”

I mean, how fucked up is a world where women have even been made to feel dirty, dissatisifed and ugly about their fucking genitals?? Keep your hands off my body applies to more than abortion laws. Keep your hands, your marketing ploys and your 100% subjective, societally-created “norms” off of my body.
